US–China Agree on 90-Day Tariff Cut to Ease Trade Tensions
Amid ongoing trade negotiations, the United States and China have reached a temporary agreement to reduce tariffs on each other’s goods for a 90-day period. During talks held in Geneva, China proposed cutting tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%, while the US offered to lower duties on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%.
According to a joint statement released in Geneva, both sides have agreed to this short-term measure to ease escalating trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. The move follows the reciprocal tariff announcement made by Donald Trump on April 2.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the discussions as “robust and productive,” noting progress on key issues such as fentanyl control. He also emphasized that both countries are aligned in their stance against economic decoupling, signaling a willingness to maintain trade ties despite ongoing challenges.
