Navarro’s Major Statement: Trump-Modi Talks Could Resolve Russian Oil Tariff Dispute
*New Delhi:* Peter Navarro, the senior counselor for trade and manufacturing policy in the US, has stated that US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi share a "very good working relationship." He expressed hope that the two leaders could resolve ongoing trade differences regarding India's Russian oil imports through dialogue.
Responding to a question from ANI, Navarro also addressed the sharp reaction in India following an article he had previously written on India-Russia oil trade. He noted that he had penned the piece regarding India's increased purchase of Russian oil during the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to Navarro, oil trade between India and Russia was not at current levels prior to the war, but India significantly increased its purchase of Russian crude oil after the conflict began. He also alleged that the trade in refined petroleum products linked to Russia bolstered Russia's war capabilities.
Recalling the backlash his article sparked in India, Navarro mentioned that he faced harsh criticism from Indian internet users. He also urged against such reactions.
Navarro stated that the existing differences between India and the US should be resolved at the level of Trump and Modi themselves. Citing the good rapport between the two leaders, he remarked that the intervention of a third party in this process would not be appropriate.
This statement comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding potential US trade actions concerning India's purchase of Russian energy.
On August 7, 2026, the US Senate passed the ‘Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’ by a vote of 86-11. The proposed legislation includes a provision empowering the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods imported from certain major nations that purchase oil or gas from Russia.
