Karnataka Hit by Drought! Sowing Below 25% in 42 Taluks, 101 Taluks Set to Be Declared Drought-Hit

Karnataka is set to declare 101 taluks drought-hit, while another 32 taluks are being reassessed amid a severe rainfall deficit and poor agricultural conditions.

The state received only 465 mm rainfall between June 1 and August 26, against the normal 666 mm, registering a 30% deficit. Dry spells of more than three consecutive weeks have affected 134 taluks. sis

The biggest concern is sowing progress. As of August 21, sowing had covered around 60 lakh hectares, just 71% of the targeted 84.10 lakh hectares. Out of Karnataka’s 240 taluks, 104 recorded sowing below 75%, while in 42 taluks, sowing coverage was below 25%, highlighting the serious impact of inadequate rainfall on crop planting. (sis)

The government has identified 101 taluks as eligible for drought declaration after ground-level verification. Conditions will be reviewed every 15 days after the formal declaration.

Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G Parameshwara said the government is spending ₹635 crore on drought management and stressed that there is no shortage of funds to support people and livestock. (sis)

The state has also urged the Centre to revise drought assessment norms, arguing that existing criteria do not adequately reflect the impact of rainfall shortages and poor sowing conditions.
